Carpenter
Bee
Trap simply hangs by an eye-hook or can be securely screwed
or
nailed.
Carpenter bees are known for their ability
to drill holes through wood and nest in them, hence the name “Carpenter” bees.
They do not construct hives and they don’t produce
honey. Regularly, they can often be mistaken for bumblebees.
Of the four main species of bees in North America, the
bumblebee and carpenter bee are of the same size and they
do share the same characteristics. Therefore, it can be
quite difficult to differentiate the two. The main difference
is that bumblebees do not cause much damage to homes compared
to carpenter bees.
Prime locations for holes can be located in unpainted,
exposed wood on sidings, window trims, decks, under roofs.
Often the infested area is east or southeast facing, but
all sides can be damaged by the bees.
These traps are designed to be environmentally safe and
be effective to kill the carpenter bees.
We now offer our naturally aged trap model which makes use of soft wood
naturally aged for six years. These traps mimic the outdoor
conditions of stumps and fence post. These traps are only available
on a limited basis. See below for purchase information.
In the countryside
of Indiana, CarpenterBeeKiller carpenters hand make each
trap. Tested in Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri for effectiveness,
the CarpenterBeeKiller traps stand the rigors or testing,
and the weather. CarpenterBeeKiller is a green oriented
organization devoted to reuse, use it up and wear it
out. Which is why we sometime reuse plastic store bags
in wrapping the
product to protect from elements when shipped.

Keep all exposed wood surfaces well painted with
polyurethane or oil-base paint to discourage Carpenter
bees from excavating since they can easily attack
exposed wood. Seal existing holes with caulking, wood putty,
or a wooden dowel affixed with wood glue. If possible,
fill the entire gallery with sealant. Carpenter
bees will not chew their way out of a sealed gallery
due to behavioral constraints.
In new nests, larvae and pupae can be killed by
inserting a long wire into the entrance hole and
probing into the gallery as far as possible.
A copper electric wire stripped of the insulation
works very well for this tasks.
Wood stains will not prevent damage, so consider using aluminum, asphalt,
vinyl siding and similar non-wood materials that
Carpenter bees avoid.
